Take your baking to the next level

6 October 2017   |   The Fair Trade Bake Sale Team

Fair trade month is upon us! That means that it’s time to celebrate baking with Fairtrade ingredients! You may now be asking yourself, “Where oh where can I find some lovely Fairtrade ingredients?” Well look no further, the Fair Trade Bake Sale team has got you covered.

There are plenty of ingredients to choose from when you decide to bake fair, but here are a few of our favorites and some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

Fairtrade Chocolate

Everybody loves chocolate, and though some may be tempted to simply eat this delicious ingredient straight from its packaging, Fairtrade chocolate can also be used to make scrumptious baked goods. Our friends at Lily’s Sweets have delectable Non-GMO Fairtrade dark chocolate baking chips that can be used in any recipe that calls for chocolate chips. They’re sure to make any cookie or treat even more delicious.

Baking Tip: If your recipe calls for chocolate chips and you’re all out, take a few Fairtrade dark chocolate bars, give them a rough chop and voila! You’ve made yourself Fairtrade chocolate chunks that you can mix into any recipe.

Fairtrade Sugar

Sugar is the grandfather of all baking ingredients, and while some prefer honey and others maple syrup, sugar will always be the baker’s best friend. Fairtrade sugar can take your baked goods to the next level if you decide to use this old favorite in innovative ways.

Fairtrade sugar – like Tate+Lyle’s Organic Turbinado Cane Sugar Tate+Lyle – provides the perfect molasses flavor and crunch for muffin toppings, but is versatile enough to be used in breads and cookies. Melt it down to create the beginnings of a caramel sauce, the possibilities are endless and sure to be sweet!

Fairtrade Coffee

Coffee isn’t just for drinking anymore, push your baking skills to the limit by incorporating Fairtrade coffee into your baked goods. Coffee is a wonderful compliment to the deep flavor of Fairtrade chocolate. Try making chocolate espresso cupcakes or mocha brownies. Just be careful not to indulge in your coffee-filled creations too close to bedtime!

Fairtrade Bananas

Call me bananas, but I just love baking with bananas! This Fair Trade Month, try incorporating Fairtrade bananas into your grandmother’s tried and true banana bread recipe. And although the Fairtrade Bake Sale team can’t give out professional nutrition advice, we highly recommend making a batch of banana oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, the perfect way to eat all the components of a well-balanced breakfast in convenient cookie form!
