How can you be a better Valentine this year? Read and share our tips for all you “wayward lovers.”

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, which means store shelves are already filling with sweet treats and goodies for your special someone. But while you’re poring over the details of that romantic evening, be sure to consider all that’s behind the special day… from the origin of that fancy chocolate bar to the gold necklace you saved up for.

Tip #1: KISS – “Keep it simple, stupid”

The classics are there for a reason. You can’t go wrong with chocolate and wine. Show your creative side by making a customized Fairtrade chocolate bar through Chocomize. Choose your chocolate, add your toppings, and have it delivered right to your door. You can even add pictures and text! It’s the perfect way to do good this Valentine’s Day while surprising your partner with something sweet. And don’t forget to pair your chocolate with Fairtrade wine – check out Fairtrade America’s wine list here.

Tip #2: Glitter: the ultimate symbol of commitment

Homemade cards are best, and everyone could use a little DIY time. Having handmade nearly 50 Christmas cards this year, I would recommend using heart shaped stamps and LOTS of glitter on recycled paper. If you’re really feeling crafty, take a look at Mr. Ellie Pooh paper and cards – they are made from elephant poo in Sri Lanka. I know it seems strange, but they have great options for recycled, handmade paper and envelopes for your homemade card… and helps resolve human-elephant conflict in Sri Lankan communities.

Tip #3: Step up your game with Fairtrade bling

If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, while still holding true to your values, you’re in luck… Fairtrade gold is now in the US. Reflective Images Jewelry offers a wide variety of Fairtrade gold and ethically sourced gemstones. So not only will you be giving a great gift to your beloved, you’ll be supporting artisanal miners around the world. Buying Fairtrade means miners receive a fairer price, safer working conditions, and social premium funds to invest in their own communities. What’s not to love? (Pro tip: if you can’t afford Fairtrade gold, look for recycled or vintage options!)

Tip #4: Spice things up a bit…with artichokes

According to PBS Food, artichokes, honey, and avocados are all aphrodisiacs. 10 bonus points if you can turn these Fairtrade products into a single, enticing dish! Email us at questions@fairtradeamerica.org with your tantalizing recipe and we may just send you some Fairtrade goodies in return.

Tip #5: Netflix and chill

Finally, a little something for all you singles out there. I know it’s tough spending Valentine’s Day alone, but two men in particular, Mr. Ben and Mr. Jerry, have always gotten me through. There’s nothing a pint of Chunky Monkey and a sappy movie can’t cure, at least for me anyway. And, in case you didn’t already know, every single pint of this frozen magic is Fairtrade. There is good to be done while eating ice cream!

For most, Valentine’s Day is a romantic holiday about love and affection, but this year you have the option to make it more. There are plenty of conscious options that support farmers, workers, and the environment. Take this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to show your Valentine that you care, in more ways than one.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Fairtrade America!
