Kishe is a Guatemalan specialty coffee company which is run by coffee farmers from the cooperative FECCEG. This organization grew out of a national recession, which caused many farmers to abandon their homes, their farms and sometimes their families in order to seek work elsewhere. FECCEG was founded in 2006 to address these issues and provide coffee farmers with sustainable livelihoods, all while producing high quality coffee using environmentally sound methods.
FECCEG has been so successful, that they won the Guatemala Cup of Excellence award this year – and extremely prestigious accolade that speaks volumes about their specialty coffee. Kishe, which is part of FECCEG, in particular focuses on supporting women farmers and even has a Woman-Grown blend. The company is hoping to expand into other Guatemalan produced foods such as honey next year.
Tate & Lyle was founded in London in 1878. For over almost 140 years, it has been creating some of the world’s best sugar. If you’ve ever been to London or other cities in England, you’ll notice the Tate name on notable institutions like the Tate Gallery or the Tate Modern museums. These Tates are one in the same!
For Tate & Lyle, sourcing cane sugar from Fairtrade farmers is not only good common sense, it makes good sustainable business sense. Since their initial commitment in 2008, Tate & Lyle Sugars has supported more farmers’ organizations to become Fairtrade certified. Today, they source Fairtrade sugar from over 20,000 small scale cane farmers in 14 different groups in 4 countries.
