Ben & Jerry’s asks a lot from its ice cream. It has to do more than just taste great—it has to do good.
From their humble beginnings, Ben & Jerry’s has been committed to creating a product that is delicious, universally loved and, most importantly, one that is good for the environment, global community, and the hard working farmers they partner with.
Since 2010, they have made a significant commitment to sourcing Fairtrade ingredients and to supporting the global Fair Trade movement. Ben & Jerry’s feels that they can have great impact on improving the lives of farmers, strengthening their communities and protecting the environment through Fairtrade.
From their decadent, rich ice cream to their over-the-top chunks & swirls, Ben & Jerry’s take care to ensure that every ingredient used in their ice cream is Fairtrade certified. Ben & Jerry’s works hard with suppliers to ensure that the farmers producing sugar, cocoa, vanilla and other ingredients are getting a fairer price for their products and harvest.
In return, small farmers manage their farms with care for the environment, with an eye toward employees' wellbeing, and the heart to give something back to their communities. It’s a beautiful cycle!
To quote one co-founder, Jerry Greenfield, “Fair trade is about making sure people get their fair share of the pie. The whole concept of fair trade goes to the heart of our values and the sense of right and wrong. Nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else.”
